Advertise yourself - FOWA Agency Alley

FOWA, Events February 16th, 2009

fowa.JPGFOWA will put your logo on the big screen during intermission for $400.   Here’s the email:

Now that your booked in I wanted to let you know of an opportunity we’ve got for 10 agencies to raise their game and stand out from the FOWA crowd. So if your looking to make a name for yourselves, maybe you’re recruiting, looking for collaborative partners or just raising your profile in the Miami and the wider US web community this could work. Here’s what you’ll get:

- Logo on our Partner Page “Leading Agencies attending FOWA”

- Logo featured during any breaks of the conference looped on the big screen in the main auditorium and also fed through to the break-out area on Plasmas

- Table top in the break out area to promote your agency in “Agency Alley”

Its $400 each and it’ll be allocated on a first come first serve basis. All we need from you is a high res EPS logo :)

Given the failure of other events such as Flash On The Beach, I’m happy to see them making creative efforts to compensate for low attendance.   I went down to FOWA with 3 colleagues last year.   This year, the other 3 can’t go.

Google Analytics Organic vs Referral Traffic

Google Analytics, Google, SEO February 6th, 2009

TiredRobot.com does not use any google adwords campaigning.   If we review (in google analytics) the top traffic sources, I see “google / organic” as source #1 and “google.com / referral” as source #2.   What is a referral from google.com if there are no AdWords campaigns running (which should be tracked as cpc anyway)?    If they were unsponsored search result clicks, then wouldn’t they appear under the “google / organic” results?

I decided to post this answer since my initial search on Google was fruitless.   I had to go straight to analytics help (RTFM) and search:  “What is the difference between  ‘google / organic’ and ‘google.com / referral’?”

What does google[referral] mean?
Not all referrals from Google.com domains come through organic search or AdWords ad listings. Referrals may come from a variety of sources, including Google Groups posts, base.google.com listings, or static pages on related Google sites. Such visits are tagged as [referral] instead of [organic] or [cpc].

SkyBlueCanvas - Lightweight CMS

CMS, PHP February 2nd, 2009

 Yet another lightweight CMS…

skybluecanvas.JPG

I didn’t install the system but I played with the demo here.   My main complaint is that lightweight is nice, but lightweight CMS systems still need to have a few core features.    The primary feature that they tend to overlook is a system for uploading images to the server and inserting them into content without forcing the content creator to upload the image on one page, copy the url, then navigate back to the content editor and paste the image URL into the TinyMCE “Insert Image” form.

Otherwise, the system is an exceptional solution as far as features.

CANCELLED!!! - Flash on the Beach Miami

Flash January 16th, 2009

fotb_fail.jpgFlash on the Beach Miami is cancelled

This would have been my first year to have a chance to go and I’m disappointed.

From their site:  “It is with huge regret that we have taken the decision to cancel FOTB Miami. Our intention was to take FOTB with its awesome speaker line up, fantastic networking opportunities and of course terrific FOTB vibe to the USA, but low registration numbers have meant that we would not be able to deliver the high calibre event that Flash on the Beach has become well known for.”

philosecurity » Blog Archive » Interview with an Adware Author
Maybe 4 or 5 months into my tenure there, a virus came out that was disabling some of the machines that we had adware on. I said, “I know enough C that I could kick the virus off the machines,” and I did. They said “Wow, that was really cool. Why don’t you do that again?” Then I started kicking off other viruses, and they said, “That’s pretty cool that you kicked all the viruses off. Why don’t you kick the competitors off, too?”
